Bangladesh’s interim government has sent a new request to India to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. She was recently given the death sentence by the International Crimes Tribunal. Hasina has been living in India since August 2024 after the student-led “July Uprising” forced her from power. Officials said this is Dhaka’s third formal request. Bangladesh has also asked India to return former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced in the same case. Dhaka said the extradition treaty requires India to send back convicted people. India has noted the verdict but has not commented on the request. (PC: AFP)

An Arunachal Pradesh–born UK resident has said she was detained and harassed by Chinese immigration officials at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Pema Wangjom Thongdok was travelling from London to Japan on November 21. She said officers declared her Indian passport “invalid” because it listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace. Officials allegedly told her, “Arunachal is part of China.” Pema claimed she was mocked, denied food, blocked from boarding her flight, and held for nearly 18 hours. Her passport was not returned until she bought a new ticket. She later contacted the Indian Consulate. She has asked India to take up the issue with China. (PC: India Today)

Indian-origin steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, UK's eighth richest person worth £15.4 billion, is leaving Britain for Dubai amid feared tax increases on the super-rich. The ArcelorMittal founder, already a Swiss tax resident, has purchased property on Dubai's Naïa Island. His exit precedes Chancellor Rachel Reeves' Wednesday budget addressing a £20 billion fiscal deficit. Advisers cite inheritance tax concerns, with UK levying 40% death duties on worldwide assets versus zero in Dubai and Switzerland. Mittal joins other wealthy entrepreneurs like Herman Narula fleeing Britain. Despite scrapping proposed 20% exit taxes, Treasury's policy flip-flops have undermined investor confidence, with billionaires departing to avoid potential capital gains and inheritance tax liabilities. Canada is set to change its citizenship law, bringing relief to many Indian-origin families. The new Bill C-3 ends the old 2009 rule that allowed citizenship by descent only if one parent was born or naturalised in Canada. This rule had created “lost Canadians,” who believed they were citizens but were left out. The new law restores their citizenship and introduces a “substantial connection test.” A Canadian parent born abroad can now pass citizenship to their child if they have lived in Canada for 1,095 days. The changes follow a court ruling that called the old rule unfair. (PC: NDTV)
