Canada is set to change its citizenship law, bringing relief to many Indian-origin families. The new Bill C-3 ends the old 2009 rule that allowed citizenship by descent only if one parent was born or naturalised in Canada. This rule had created “lost Canadians,” who believed they were citizens but were left out. The new law restores their citizenship and introduces a “substantial connection test.” A Canadian parent born abroad can now pass citizenship to their child if they have lived in Canada for 1,095 days. The changes follow a court ruling that called the old rule unfair. (PC: NDTV)
