Actor Ali Fazal criticized the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) for celebrating alumna Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prix win at Cannes. Fazal highlighted FTII's past disciplinary actions against Kapadia, who led a 2015 student protest against Gajendra Chauhan's appointment as FTII president. FTII's social media post praised Kapadia’s achievement, but Fazal called it hypocritical. In 2015, Pune Police filed charges against Kapadia and other students, and FTII denied them scholarships. However, in 2017, new director Bhupendra Kainthola supported Kapadia’s Cannes trip for her film "Afternoon Clouds."
