The Central government has ordered the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club to vacate its prime Lutyens’ Delhi premises by June 5, citing defence-linked infrastructure and public-interest projects. The move follows years of legal battles, bureaucratic intervention, and delayed reforms within one of India’s most elite clubs. Allegations of mismanagement, nepotism, and deviation from the club’s original sporting purpose had triggered action by the NCLT and NCLAT, leading to a government-appointed administration in 2021. Despite court-monitored reform efforts, elections were repeatedly delayed. The development could mark the end of the century-old institution’s presence near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. (PC: X)
