Two men have been charged with terrorism offences after police said they tried to set off homemade bombs near the New York City mayor’s residence. Authorities said the suspects, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, threw explosive devices outside Gracie Mansion during a protest on Saturday. Police said the explosives did not detonate and no one was injured. A third device was later found inside a car linked to the suspects. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the pair were inspired by Islamic State propaganda. She said the devices “had the potential to cause devastating harm.” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said those responsible “should be held fully accountable.”
