As India celebrated Diwali with fireworks, toxic air drifted across the border into Pakistan, worsening Lahore’s already poor air quality. On Tuesday, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 266, making it the world’s second most polluted city after Delhi. Pakistan’s Punjab government blamed pollution from Indian cities, carried by low-speed winds. In response, authorities in Lahore deployed smog guns, water sprinklers, and anti-smog squads. Over 80 people were arrested for violating air pollution rules. Officials called the crisis a “cross-border environmental challenge” and urged people to limit emissions and avoid open burning.
