Leicester’s famous Diwali celebrations will go ahead on October 20 but with major cutbacks. The city council confirmed only street lights on the Golden Mile will remain. Fireworks, stage shows, and food stalls have been banned after safety concerns raised by the Safety Advisory Group. Last year, around 50,000 people attended the festival. Leicester East MP Shivani Raja criticised the decision, saying the festival is “under threat.” The Belgrave Business Association also expressed disappointment. Leicester has one of the largest Hindu communities in the UK. Whether officials reconsider before the festival is still unclear. (PC: India Today)
