Bangladesh announced Monday it will export hilsa fish to India ahead of Durga Puja festivities, marking "enduring Bangladesh-India friendship." The neighboring country had banned hilsa exports to India in early September 2024, but reversed the decision following appeals from traders in both nations. Bangladesh's interim government approved exporting 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish during the Durga Puja season. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah confirmed the decision on X, calling hilsa the "quintessential fish" and emphasizing the gesture as a symbol of bilateral friendship. The export resumption comes as a relief to Indian consumers who consider hilsa essential for traditional Durga Puja celebrations, highlighting the cultural and economic ties between the neighboring countries.
