Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar sharply criticized the U.S. imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian imports linked to its purchases of Russian oil, calling the action “unjustified and unreasonable.” He underscored that trade negotiations with Washington remain underway, but warned that India has firm “red lines” to protect its farmers and small producers. India faces an additional 25% tariff set to take effect on August 27, bringing total duties to a staggering 50%. Jaishankar also noted that Western criticism lacks fairness, pointing out that Europe’s trade with Russia significantly surpasses India’s. He affirmed India’s strategic autonomy in making national-interest decisions. (PC: X)
