China’s envoy to India, Xu Feihong, said the Dalai Lama has no authority to decide the future of the Tibetan Buddhist reincarnation system, calling it a 700-year-old religious tradition involving over 1,000 “Living Buddha” lineages. His comments came ahead of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, sparking global concern. India’s Minister Kiren Rijiju countered, asserting only the Dalai Lama and traditional Tibetan Buddhist norms can determine his successor. The Dalai Lama earlier confirmed the tradition would continue, with his reincarnation to be recognized by the Gaden Phodrang Trust. China insists reincarnations must follow state rules, including approval via a "golden urn" ritual. (PC: India Today)
