Azad Sheikh, 41, a Bangladeshi national, allegedly paid ₹15,000 to obtain an Aadhaar card using forged documents, enabling him to work as a driver in Kolkata. Arrested for rash driving and injuring a police officer, his case unveiled a broader issue: foreign nationals acquiring Indian identity documents through illicit means. Touts reportedly charge between ₹500 and ₹15,000 to produce genuine Aadhaar cards without proper verification. These cards are then used to secure other official documents like voter IDs and driving licences. Authorities have discovered instances where Aadhaar enrolment officials outsourced their duties, facilitating the issuance of unauthorized cards. Such small-scale operations make detection challenging, especially in border districts like North and South 24-Parganas. (PC: CompareRemit & The Economic Times)
