On May 7, 2025, India launched "Operation Sindoor," targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, including Muzaffarabad, Kotli, and Bahawalpur. The strikes aimed at terrorist infrastructure linked to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 Indian civilians. India described the operation as "measured" and "non-escalatory." Pakistan reported at least nine civilian deaths, including children, and 38 injuries, accusing India of targeting mosques and residential areas. In retaliation, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian jets and destroyed a brigade headquarters. Both of these claims were identified as fake later by PIB Fact Check on their X Handle. Cross-border shelling intensified, leading to additional civilian casualties. “Three innocent civilians lost their lives in indiscriminate firing/shelling. The Indian Army is responding in a proportionate manner,” the Indian Army said in a statement. Heavy artillery exchange is still ongoing along the LoC, according to the sources. International leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and U.S. President Donald Trump, urged restraint to prevent further escalation between the nuclear-armed nations.
