India has triggered an unexpected release of water from the Baglihar and Salal dams in Jammu and Kashmir, deviating from the usual practice of reservoir flushing in August. This move comes after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the Pahalgam terror attack. While this flushing is a routine activity to clear silt and ensure optimal power generation, the untimed release could lead to reduced water flows downstream in Pakistan. India did not provide advance notice of the release, which violates the terms of the IWT, which India had kept "in abeyance." (PC: PTI)
