On May 3, 2025, at least 17 fishermen from Akkaraipettai village in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district were injured in a suspected pirate attack by six unidentified individuals in a speedboat, believed to be from Sri Lanka. The incident occurred while the fishermen were operating near Kodiyakkarai. The attackers used sharp weapons, looted fishing gear and GPS devices worth around ₹10 lakh, and fled the scene. The injured were hospitalized, and the local fishing community launched a strike, demanding swift government action and better maritime security, warning of intensified protests if such attacks continue.
