Indian-origin Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman has advanced to the November runoff election for mayor of Los Angeles. Raman overtook Republican candidate Spencer Pratt as more mail-in ballots were counted after the primary election. She secured 28.5 per cent of the vote, while Pratt received 25.8 per cent. Raman will now face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a head-to-head contest on November 3. Raman is known for supporting affordable housing, social services and government accountability. The race is expected to be closely watched as voters choose the leader of the second-largest city in the United States.
